About the event

Workshop Title: Paleontology through the Lens of Origami

Workshop description:  Come learn about the basics of origami design and how I use it to create paleoart.   This workshop will be interactive - you'll learn how to fold your own prehistoric creatures.   Materials will be provided.  Prior experience is not required. Travis Nolan is a student and an origami artist.  He's currently a junior at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where he's studying geology, biology, and applied physiology.

Travis has been volunteering with Whiteside since 2014 and is now researching Seymouria baylorensis in collaboration with Whiteside and several professors at SMU.  He's planning to attend grad school to specialize in paleontology after his time at SMU.

Travis has been folding origami since the age of seven.  A few informal lessons with friends turned into something of a passion, which led Travis to explore the mathematics of origami design theory as Travis entered high school.  Since then he has specialized in 22.5-degree design, especially of extinct animals.  Travis volunteers with Paper for Water in Dallas to use origami to raise money for water wells in developing countries.  Travis has had his folds featured in magazines, newspapers, and on book covers, and has received international recognition for his work.
